Ilarion Merculieff weaves the remarkable strands of his life and culture into a fascinating account that begins with his traditional Unangan (Aleut) upbringing on a remote island in the Bering Sea, through his immersion in both the Russian Orthodox Church and his tribe’s holistic spiritual beliefs. He recounts his developing consciousness and call to leadership, and describes his work of the past thirty years bringing together Western science and Indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge and wisdom to address the most pressing issues of our time. Tracing the extraordinary history of his ancestors—who mummified their dead in a way very similar to the Egyptians, constructed one of the most sophisticated high seas kayaks in the world, and densely populated shorelines in North America for ten thousand years—Merculieff describes the rich traditions of spirituality, art, dance, music, storytelling, science, and technology that enabled them to survive their harsh conditions. The Unangan people of the Aleutian Islands endured slavery at the hands of the U.S. government and were placed in an internment camp during WWII, where they suffered malnutrition and disease that decimated 10 percent of their population. Merculieff movingly describes how the compassion of Indigenous Elders has guided him in his work and life, which has been rife with struggle and hardship. He explains that environmental degradation, the extinction of species, pollution, war, and failing public institutions are all reflections of our relationships with ourselves. In order to deal with these critical challenges, he argues, we must reenter the chaos of the natural world, rediscover our balance of the masculine and the sacred feminine, and heal ourselves. Then, perhaps, we can heal the world.

On June 29, 1997, a group of 12 beginning mountaineering students and two instructors from the University of Alaska-Anchorage was involved in a tragic climbing accident just east of Anchorage. Descending a snow-filled gully from the 4,800-foot summit of Ptarmigan Peak on a beautiful summer afternoon, a student on the highest rope team slipped and was unable to self-arrest. When he reached the end of his rope the force of the impact knocked his teammates from their stances even though they were using ice axes as anchors. The top team fell onto the rope team below causing a chain reaction. Within seconds all 14 climbers were swept nearly 1,000 feet down the 30-40 degree slope. Before the day was over, two students had died and many others were seriously injured. With this incident in mind, the University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA) has published "Lessons Learned: A Guide to Accident Prevention and Crisis Response." Edited by Deb Ajango, coordinator of UAA's academic outdoor program, Lessons Learned is comprehensive in its look at the design and delivery of outdoor adventure programs from the standpoint of managing risks to participants.

Postmaterial spiritual psychology posits that consciousness can contribute to the unfolding of material events and that the human brain can detect broad, non-material communications. In this regard, this emerging field of postmaterial psychology marks a stark departure from psychology's traditional quantum measurements and tenets. The Oxford Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality codifies the leading empirical evidence in the support and application of postmaterial psychological science. Sections in this volume include: - personality and social psychology factors and implications - spiritual development and culture - spiritual dialogue, prayer, and intention in Western mental health - Eastern traditions and psychology - physical health and spirituality - positive psychology - scientific advances and applications related to spiritual psychology With chapters from leading scholars in psychology, medicine, physics, and biology, The Oxford Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality is an interdisciplinary reference for a rapidly emerging approach to contemporary science. This overarching work provides both a foundation and a roadmap for what is truly a new ideological age.

What is consciousness? Conventional thinking tells us it is the images, sensations, thoughts, and feelings produced by the brain. When the neurons in the brain stop firing, consciousness ceases to be. But does it? In this profound book, three world-renowned thinkers look behind the veil of our commonly held assumptions about human consciousness and reality. They examine the true nature of consciousness in three revelatory, engrossing essays. Ervin Laszlo makes a compelling case that consciousness is a phenomenon that transcends our physical beings. Jean Houston examines consciousness and its place in what she calls the "quantum field of the cosmos." Larry Dossey offers a trenchant, erudite takedown of the physicalist view of the mind. Together they change the way we see ourselves and our universe. With a Foreword by Stanley Krippner, Alan Watts Professor of Psychology, Saybrook University
