Birdwatchers' Year is, in essence, six 'years' of bird activity and behaviour as recorded, month by month, by six experienced bird watchers and ornithologists. The result is a fascinating compilation of fact, anecdote and general observation as seen and noted by the authors, that will appeal to birdwatchers at all levels of expertise. The habitats (Brent Reservoir in NW London, a Kentish woodland, the Ouse Washes in Cambridgeshire, farmland in Derbyshire, a mountain region of SW Scotland, and an island, the Calf of Man) encompass a wide and varied range of breeding, resident and passage birds, but the authors' observations are not confined to bird life alone - there are comments and 'asides' on many aspects of natural history and wildlife, weather and seasons, conservation and ecology. Each author has brought an individual approach to his 'diary' with the result that they are entertainingly diverse in style, content and viewpoint. The common factor throughout is an affectionate regard for the subject, an intimate knowledge of the habitat, and an evident understanding and knowledge of the birds and their environment. The diarists are: Leo Batten, Research Officer at the British Trust for Ornithology; Dr Jim Flegg, Director of the BTO; Jeremy Sorensen, RSPB Warden of the Ouse Washes; Donald Watson, bird artist and past-President of the Scottish Ornithologists' Club; Mike J. Wareing, farmer; Malcolm Wright, Warden of the Calf of Man Bird Observatory. The diaries are illustrated with line drawings by Ian Willis, except for that of Donald Watson, which is illustrated by its author. The book jacket illustrations are by Ian Willis.

Many birdwatchers keep a species list of some sort and at any level, it is a useful aide memoire to what was seen, when and where. This book offers guidance on how to start listing birds, how to identify them, what sort of notes to take and essential equipment. The log part of the book is divided into the months of the year. For each month there is helpful advice on the main events, where to go and what to look for, plus seasonal suggestions which provide handy hints and tips on equipment, field craft, and songs and calls to listen out for. The rest of the section is left blank for your notes and sketches so it's up to you what you record. There is a tick list in which to log the birds seen month-by-month throughout the year, and an illustrated species checklist of virtually all of the 250 or so common species that occur in Britain.

WHAT DRIVES GOOD MEN TO MURDER? 'The most gripping book I've read in years. William Shaw is, quite simply, an outstanding storyteller' Peter May 'Grips the reader by the throat and never lets go' Independent Sergeant William South has always avoided investigating murder. A passionate birdwatcher and quiet man, he has few relationships and prefers it that way. But when his only friend is found brutally beaten, South's detachment is tested. Not only is he bereft - it seems that there's a connection between the suspect and himself. For South has a secret. He knows the kind of rage that killed his friend. He knows the kind of man who could do it. He knows, because Sergeant William South himself is a murderer. Moving from the storm-lashed, bird-wheeling skies of the Kent Coast to the wordless war of the Troubles, The Birdwatcher is a crime novel of suspense, intelligence and powerful humanity about fathers and sons, grief and guilt and facing the darkness within.
