"Based upon a three-year multi-disciplinary international research project, Political and Civic Participation examines the interplay of factors affecting civic and political engagement and participation across different generations, nations and ethnic groups, and the shifting variety of forms this participation can take. The book draws upon an extensive body of data to answer the following key questions: - Why do many citizens fail to vote in elections? - Why are young people turning increasingly to street demonstrations, charitable activities, consumer activism and social media to express their political and civic views? - What are the barriers which hinder political participation by women, ethnic minorities and migrants? - How can greater levels of engagement with public issues be encouraged amongst all citizens? Together, the chapters in this volume provide a comprehensive overview of current understandings of the factors and processes which influence citizens' patterns of political and civic engagement. The book draws on theoretical insights provided by a range of disciplines including Politics, Sociology, Social Policy, Psychology and Education. With contributions from leading international figures working in a range of disciplines, the book offers a uniquely authoritative and coherent overview of the field. Political and Civic Participation provides an invaluable resource for all those who are concerned with citizens' levels of engagement including: researchers and academics in the social sciences; politicians and political institutions; media professionals; ministries of education, educational professionals and schools; youth workers and education NGOs; and leaders of ethnic minority and migrant organizations and communities"--

This includes political knowledge and interest, political values and policy preferences, perceptions of parties, preferences for parties, what parties offer ethnic minorities, electoral registration, turnout and vote choice, other forms of political participation (such as signing petitions and demonstrations) and trust in political institutions andsatisfaction with the democratic system. The book considers the ways in which ethnic minorities resemble or differ from the white British population, and differences between different minority groups. There isspecial focus on the extent to which social exclusion, discrimination, multiculturalism and generational change may help or hinder political integration. The evidence comes from major new surveys. Although the analysis is academically rigorous, it is written for a more general audience.

This annual UNICEF report monitoring the impact of transition in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) examines the situation of young people in the 27 countries of the CEE and the CIS. It looks at what has happened to the 65 million 15 to 24-year-olds who are the first generation to complete their education, look for jobs, marry and have families, since the fall of the Berlin Wall. As well as quantitative data, it includes the views of young people on issues such as education, politics, health, work and leisure, gathered during group discussions in six transition countries. The Report finds that those countries that have progressed further in the transition agenda offer young people greater opportunities in education, business, and politics but it warns that new freedoms have meant new risks almost unknown to earlier generations: unemployment, drugs and other substance abuse, and HIV infection. Chapters cover: health, including lifestyle; education; employment; political and social participation. A statistical annex is included. The Report finds that the health risks of young people have increased. There is an impending HIV/AIDS crisis in a region which was one of the least affected parts of the world. Alcohol, drug and tobacco use and the suicide rate are on the increase in many countries in the region. The Report proposes the development of youth-friendly policies to tackle the issues outlined in the report and suggests ways in which these could be made most effective. These include involving young people in service planning and provision and targeting young people as valuable assets and able partners.

Youth policy in Moldova, is the latest in the Council of Europe series of youth policy reviews. As Moldova is the 16th country to be reviewed since 1997, this report has been enriched by the experience gained from the previous reviews of countries in western and eastern Europe and one in the Commonwealth of independent States (Armenia). These reviews have nurtured the development of an informed way of thinking about youth policy and strategies for implementation. The report is based on a cross-sectoral understanding of youth policy, it focuses on youth policy structures, education (formal and especially non-formal), transition to the labour market and entrepreneurship. There are overviews of policy related to social security (health and social protection, childcare), juvenile justice and sport. Particular attention has been paid to questions such as migration, urbanrural divisions and the Transnistria issue. There is also a chapter dedicated to cross-cutting issues, including y
