Luigi Russolo (1885–1947)—painter, composer, builder of musical instruments, and first-hour member of the Italian Futurist movement—was a crucial figure in the evolution of twentieth-century aesthetics. As creator of the first systematic poetics of noise and inventor of what has been considered the first mechanical sound synthesizer, Russolo looms large in the development of twentieth-century music. In the first English language study of Russolo, Luciano Chessa emphasizes the futurist’s interest in the occult, showing it to be a leitmotif for his life and a foundation for his art of noises. Chessa shows that Russolo’s aesthetics of noise, and the machines he called the intonarumori, were intended to boost practitioners into higher states of spiritual consciousness. His analysis reveals a multifaceted man in whom the drive to keep up with the latest scientific trends coexisted with an embrace of the irrational, and a critique of materialism and positivism.

The music and noise manifestos of the Italian Futurists formed a blueprint for sonic warfare waged against traditionalism, a radical new agenda played out with machines primed for maximal acoustic destruction and aimed at the negation of all existing value systems. THE ART OF NOISE collects together these and other writings for the first time in English, showing how the origins of modern noise music actually date from a century ago, forming an invaluable insight into Futurist thought and its most enduring and relevant legacies, and revealing how an understanding of noise-art is key to a complete comprehension of Futurist painting. THE ART OF NOISE includes five key Futurist manifestos: Luigi Russolo's "The Art of Noises” and "The Futurist Noise Machines”, and Francesco Balilla Pratella's "Manifesto of Futurist Musicians”, "Technical Manifesto of Futurist Music”, and "Destruction of Quadrature”; plus Carlo Carrà's related sensory manifesto "The Painting of Sounds, Noises and Smells”; Bruno Corra's notes on "Chromatic Music”; proto-Futurist Ferrucchio Busoni's visionary and influential "Sketch for a New Aesthetic of Sound Art”; a historical introduction on Futurist music and its legacy; and a chronology of Futurist music and noise.

This investigation of the metaphoric relationship between music and landscape is also a study of the poetics of onomatopoeia and a theory of sound in the arts. The history of European musicology is perennially revised around the debate about whether music is a representational or an abstract art. This discussion may be extended to all of the sound arts, and to language itself. Thus the phenomenon of onomatopoeia is emblematic of what might be seen as the ontological aporia of sound art: mimesis is simultaneously a loss and a gain, placing representation on uneven ground where the signified loses structural integrity and existential verifiability, while the signifier gains in complexity and ambiguity. Through literary, performative and sonic analysis, this book investigates audiophonic representation, proposes a unified field theory of the sound arts; offers descriptive possibilities for audio productions; and looks at audio mimesis in relation to gardens and landscape.

In this book, the author writes freely and often humorously about his life, beginning with his earliest childhood days. He describes his survival of American bombing raids when he was a teenager in Japan, his emergence as a researcher in a post-war university system that was seriously deficient, and his life as a mature mathematician in Princeton and in the international academic community. Every page of this memoir contains personal observations and striking stories. Such luminaries as Chevalley, Oppenheimer, Siegel, and Weil figure prominently in its anecdotes. Goro Shimura is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Princeton University. In 1996, he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the American Mathematical Society. He is the author of Elementary Dirichlet Series and Modular Forms (Springer 2007), Arithmeticity in the Theory of Automorphic Forms (AMS 2000), and Introduction to the Arithmetic Theory of Automorphic Functions (Princeton University Press 1971).

In this classic work of clairvoyant investigation first published in 1913, Charles Leadbeater reveals those hidden aspects of the physical world that, once seen, imbue life with greater significance, happiness, and meaning. Normally glimpsed by only a few, these hidden realms consist of the fourth dimension, the higher world, and the plan and purpose of existence. Leadbeater shows how all three influence our daily lives, in a remarkable work of exploration that can be enjoyed by anyone who ever wondered, "Is that all there is?" English clergyman turned spiritualist CHARLES WEBSTER LEADBEATER (1854-1934) was ordained as an Anglican priest, but later joined the prominent Theosophical Society and traveled to India to study alternative spiritual and occult practices, eventually settling into his life as a clairvoyant and author. His other works include Man Visible and Invisible and The Science of the Sacrament.
