This third edition volume expands on the previous editions both by presenting more detailed protocols for the techniques described in the first and second editions of High Throughput Screening: Methods and Protocols and by covering important new procedures. The first chapter of this book provides an overview of important assay development techniques, while the rest of the chapters detail how to develop and execute screens at whatever throughput the user needs. Some chapter examples are: structure-based virtual screening, high throughput screening using mass spectrometry, identification of state-dependent blockers for voltage gated calcium channels, bioluminescence resonance energy transfer platform to monitor protein-protein interactions in live cells, high throughput flow cytometry, and application of imaging-based assays in microplate formats for high content screening. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting edge and thorough, High Throughput Screening: Methods and Protocols, Third Edition, is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in HTS research.

Driving further the research on mammalian alkaline phosphatase structure and function, Phosphatase Modulators collects expert contributions into one “how to” manual for basic scientists interested in initiating a drug discovery effort. While this book contains the traditional method chapters and some typical reviews on the structure and known functions of phosphatases, other contributions are meant to discuss approaches and alternatives useful in making “go/no-go” decisions in high throughput screening (HTS) and lead optimization campaigns. Many chapters focus on tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) as well as protein phosphatases. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters in this volume include the kind of detail and key implementation advice that promotes reproducible results. Step-by-step and practical, Phosphatase Modulators offers a path to understanding many of the facets and complexities associated with undertaking a drug discovery effort and will serve as a roadmap to initiating those efforts.

Using the most well-studied behavioral analyses of animal subjects to promote a better understanding of the effects of disease and the effects of new therapeutic treatments on human cognition, Methods of Behavior Analysis in Neuroscience provides a reference manual for molecular and cellular research scientists in both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. The materials presented draw from the scholarly works of recognized experts in several fields of cognitive and behavioral neuroscience. Each contributor describes the most frequently used and most widely accepted version of the model, and each chapter includes: (1) a well-referenced introduction that covers the theory behind and the utility of the model; (2) a detailed and step-by-step methodology; and (3) an approach to the interpretation of the data presented. Many chapters also provide examples of actual experiments that use the method. This text eliminates the guesswork from the process of designing the methodology for many of the animal behavioral models that are used to study brain disorders, drug abuse, toxicology, and cognitive drug development. It will also significantly reduce the time spent assessing literature and developing models for studying animal subjects. Overall, Methods of Behavioral Analysis in Neuroscience is an invaluable reference source for the professional who seeks to comprehend the effects of disease on human cognition.

Do not learn the tricks of the trade, learn the trade I started teachinggraduate coursesin chemical sensors in early 1980s, ?rst as a o- quarter (30 h) class then as a semester course and also as several intensive, 4–5-day courses. Later I organized my lecture notes into the ?rst edition of this book, which was published by Plenum in 1989 under the title Principles of Chemical Sensors. I started working on the second edition in 2006. The new edition of Principles of Chemical Sensors is a teaching book, not a textbook. Let me explain the difference. Textbooks usually cover some more or less narrow subject in maximum depth. Such an approach is not possible here. The subject of chemical sensors is much too broad, spanning many aspects of physical and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, solid-state physics, optics, device fabrication, electrical engine- ing, statistical analysis, and so on. The challengefor me has been to present uniform logical coverage of such a large area. In spite of its relatively shallow depth, it is intended as a graduate course. At its present state the amount of material is more thancan be coveredin a one-semestercourse (45h). Two one-quartercourseswould be more appropriate. Because of the breadth of the material, the sensor course has a somewhat unexpected but, it is hoped, bene?cial effect.

This textbook discusses how the various types of antibiotics and related drugs work to cure infections. Then it delves into the very serious matter of how bacteria are becoming resistant to these antibiotics. Appropriate for a one-semester course at either the graduate or advanced undergraduate level, this textbook contains worked examples of (1) experimental procedures and (2) interpreting data.
