Brain injury is a worldwide leading cause of mortality and morbidity and requires early and appropriate management to minimize these adverse sequelae. Despite such needs, access to specialist centers is limited, forcing both immediate and secondary care of these patients onto generalist staff. These responsibilities are made more problematical by differences in patient management between and even within specialist centers, due in part to an insuffcient evidence-base for many interventions directed at brain injury. This book is borne out of the above observations and is targeted at em- gency and acute medicine, anesthetic and general intensive care staff caring for brain injury of diverse etiology, or surgical teams responsible for the inpatient care of minor to moderate head trauma. Although explaining the various facets of specialist care, the book is not intended to compete with texts directed at neurosciences staff, but aims to advise on optimal care in general hospitals, including criteria for transfer, by a combination of narrative on pathophysiology, principles of care, templates for documentation, and highly specifc algorithms for particular problems. It is intended that the content and structure can form the basis of guidelines and protocols that refect the needs of individual units and that can be constantly refned. Our ultimate goal is to promote informed, consistent, auditable, multidisciplinary care for this cohort of patients and we hope that this text contributes to that process.

The critical care management of patients with life-threatening neurological conditions requires the ability to treat neurological injuries, manage medical complications and perform invasive procedures whilst balancing the management of the brain and the body. The Oxford Textbook of Neurocritical Care provides an authoritative and up-to-date summary of the scientific basis, clinical techniques and management guidelines in this exciting clinical discipline. This highly authoritative textbook is conceptually divided into three sections. Section 1 provides an accessible guide to the general principles of neurophysiology and neuropharmacology, cardiorespiratory support, management of fluids and intracranial hypertension. Section 2 outlines the use of multiple monitoring modes which are crucial to diagnosis and management. Section 3 covers the management of the major pathologies encountered during neurointensive care with an emphasis on evidence-based practice or consensus guidelines to provide a cohesive and definitive clinical resource. Authored by an international team of expert practitioners this textbook reflects world-wide practice and guidelines. This volume is published with a concurrent online version, which features access to the full content of the textbook, contains links from the references to primary research journal articles, allows full text searches, and provides access to figures and tables that can be downloaded to PowerPoint RG. The Practice of Emergency and Critical Care Neurology serves as the definitive authoritative reference on the care of the patient with a critical neurologic disorder at risk of deterioration and in need of immediate attention. This work is an expanded new edition of the book on the management of patients with critical neurologic disorders. This single-authored monograph is broad in scope and follows the patients from the very moment they enter the emergency department to their care in the neurosciences intensive care unit. This book condenses the essential information into several sections. These are: The General Principles of Recognition of Critically Ill Neurologic Patients in the Emergency Department, The Evaluation of Presenting Symptoms Indicating Urgency and Critical Emergency, General Principles of Management of Critically Ill Patients, Monitoring Devices and Diagnostic Tests, Complete Management of Specific Disorders in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit, Postoperative Neurosurgical and Neurointerventional Complications, Management of Medical Complications and End of Life Care. This accessibly written book differs from the conventional by specifically following the time course of clinical complexities as they emerge and change. It offers advice on how to diagnose and manage acute neuromuscular respiratory failure, acute worrisome headache, acute febrile confusion, acute diplopia, acute movement disorders, acute paraplegia, seizures and coma of uncertain cause in the emergency department. The major disorders requiring neurocritical care are covered in great detail and include traumatic brain injury aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral hemorrhage, hemispheric ischemic stroke, basilar artery occlusion, acute bacterial meningitis and encephalitis, myasthenic crisis and severe Guillan Barre syndrome. This book comes with a pocket book of selected tables and figures. This booklet covers all essential points for quick reference and has been considered a 'survival guide' for the house staff.
