Few are better placed to write on the United Kingdom's relations with the European Union than David Heathcoat-Amory. As a Member of Parliament, Minister of State and Privy Counselor, he witnessed two Prime Ministers wrestling with the 'elephant in the room'.He describes Margaret Thatcher's struggles against EU control and the clashes with cabinet colleagues which split the Conservative Party and brought her down. Under John Major, in the Whips' Office, the Treasury and Minister for Europe in the FCO, he played a pivotal role in the parliamentary battles over the Maastricht Treaty and events which kept Britain out of the Euro but created the devastating Eurozone crisis of today. He resigned as Paymaster General in 1996. In Opposition, Heathcoat-Amory was sent by the House of Commons to negotiate a Constitution for Europe, which he opposed with a small group of dissidents from other EU countries. As they predicted, the European Constitution was decisively rejected in referendums in France and Holland but forced through anyway, with Blair's Government refusing a referendum at home. The book includes his blueprint for a radically new relationship between Britain and the EU, based on the principles of democracy, internationalism and free trade. With leadership and ambition, the Author argues that this is now attainable with the final decision resting with the people in a referendum. In Confessions of a Eurosceptic, the Author, whose initial enthusiasm for the Common Market turned to hostility, gives an informed insider's candid take on the most important political issue of our generation.

What has been the political impact of the Eurozone Debt Crisis in the UK? To what extent have the bank collapses and bailouts reinforced Britain’s Eurosceptic trajectory? In this revised and updated second edition Chris Gifford addresses these key questions reflecting on the Labour government’s approach to Europe while exploring the extensive mobilisation of Eurosceptic forces in opposition to the Conservative-led coalition government. The book examines the extent to which Euroscepticism has become dominant within both the Conservative leadership and the bulk of its parliamentary party and how this has affected the relationship of the coalition government with the European Union. By placing current attitudes to Europe in relation to the wider history of Britain’s post war interaction with its continental neighbours the author shows how British Euroscepticism is structural in nature and a persistent and institutionalised feature of UK Politics.

This liber amicorum, offered to Dirk van de Kaa on the occasion of his retirement as Professor of Demography at the University of Amsterdam, opens with a biography and a bibliography. The core of the book is formed by 32 essays in honour of Van de Kaa, written by colleagues and friends from all over the world, who have in common that in one way or another their paths have crossed his. Most of them are demographers, and the topics they chose for their contribution cover almost the entire range of demography and often connect to the activities and scientific topics for which Dirk van de Kaa has become so well-known, such as the Second Demographic Transition. Next to these demographic contributions, the book contains several essays from other disciplines, such as physical planning, geography, sociology, history, and general literature. Dirk van de Kaa retired as Professor of Demography at the University of Amsterdam at the end of 1998. He has played an important role in both Dutch and international demography since the early 1970s. He was the first Director of the Netherlands Interuniversity Demographic Institute, Scientific Secretary of the Royal Commission on Population, represented the Netherlands in the Population Commission of the United Nations, played a crucial role at the UN Population Conferences in Bucharest (1974), Mexico City (1984) and Cairo (1994), and was active in the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) and the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS), which he founded. Van de Kaa also played an important role in establishing the postgraduate programme in demography pdoD (currently nethur-Demography).
