The present volume, Publications of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1964–2005, is a successor to a volume published by the Museum in 1965 entitled Publications of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1870–1964. These two bibliographic volumes endeavor to list all the known books, pamphlets, and serial publications bearing the Museum's imprint, and issued by the institution during the first 135 years of its existence (through June 2005). The first volume was compiled by Albert TenEyck Gardner, at the time an Associate Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture, and the present volume has been compiled from the Annual Reports issued by the Museum during the relevant years. Together the two volumes testify to the tremendous contributions made to knowledge by the curators and conservators of the Metropolitan and by the many other experts who have contributed to the Museum's exhibition catalogues. Various issues of the Bulletin emphasize the great sweep of the Museum's acquisitions during these years, and the exhibition catalogues—a number of them Alfred H. Barr Jr., Award or the George Wittenborn Award—testify to the continuity of the institution's dedicated program to enrich people's lives through knowledge of art. (This title was originally published in 2006.)

The Robert Lehman Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses one of the finest collections of frames in the world. The collection Robert Lehman bequeathed to the Museum includes nearly 400 frames, most of them Italian and French and dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Although he bought most of these frames to display his paintings and drawings, a number of them were acquired as works of art in their own right. Using the documentary evidence that survives, this volume attempts to place these frames on the pictures and in the interiors for which they were intended. For each frame, the author has provided a profile drawing that is a key to its design, origin, date, and application. This volume is the 13th in a series of 16 on the Robert Lehman Collection. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

American modernist art has been defined for decades by a narrow range of works by almost entirely male New York-based artists in the circles of Alfred Stieglitz and Walter Arensberg. Typically, Georgia O'Keeffe is the solitary acknowledged exception to these male-dominated modernist circles. But, as Marian Wardle and the contributors to this long-overdue collection reveal, the exceptions are far more numerous than have been credited. Contributing significantly to the structure of American modernism is a group of women who were once the art students of the popular and perhaps most influential American art teacher of the twentieth century, Robert Henri (1865-1929). Henri encouraged an art that was expressive of personal emotions and experience and that [illegible] grounded in life. He also preached equality among different media and approaches to art. Giving [illegible] to his teachings, his women students engaged in a wide variety of artistic production. painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, decorative [illegible] and furniture broadens our understanding of American modernism and illuminates the role of [illegible] artists in shaping it. Ironically, however, these women have remained largely unstudied, and [illegible] unknown, even among art historians. The seven new essays included in this volume move beyond the famed Ashcan School - the [illegible] group of Henri's male students who worked in a narrow range of urban realist subjects - to recover [illegible] lesser known work of his women students. American studies, and cultural studies demonstrate how these women participated in [illegible] modernizing of women's roles during this era; how gender controlled their art, productivity, [illegible] and reception; how their many styles, media, and subjects enrich our understanding of modern [illegible] art; and how the work of modern women artists relates to women's involvement in other areas [illegible] modern American society and culture, including labor and social reform, patronage, literature, [illegible] and music. Lavishly illustrated and complemented by short biographies of more than 400 of Henri's [illegible] this delightful collection adds a long-ignored but deserving dimension to an expanded story of [illegible] modernism and to women's contributions to the arts.
